Jennifer Lytle, MD, MPH
If I have the pleasure of working with you as your psychiatrist, here is a description of what you can generally expect.
Initial Assessment: The first step to beginning treatment involves a comprehensive assessment. The assessment will cover a large number of topics (recent symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, medications, family history, etc.) and we will talk about your expectations for treatment. We will schedule an initial 50-70 minute visit, but in some cases we will need another visit of 30-50 minutes to complete the evaluation. As part of the assessment, we will talk about your preliminary diagnosis and a plan for treatment. Past medical records may be requested (with your written permission) and lab tests are sometimes conducted as a prerequisite to starting medication. Sometimes medication is not prescribed on the first visit as this important step, if decided upon, needs careful thought and consideration as well as a solid follow-up plan.
We will make a decision after the evaluation to determine if we want to establish a treatment relationship and continue on to having more regular visits for therapy, medication management, or both. If you are already in therapy with another provider, we can work together to decide what my role can be to best serve you (often this includes me managing your medication and communicating with your therapist about your progress and treatment plan).
Follow-up visits: Very simple medication follow-up visits may last as little as 20-30 minutes but therapy or therapy plus medication management visits will generally be 45-60 minutes.
Phone calls: I keep my phone on after-hours in case of an urgent patient call, so please only call 720-316-8228 between 6pm and 8am if it is an urgent matter. If you have a non-urgent administrative matter (scheduling, billing, etc.) and it is after 6pm or before 8am, please use our secure email messaging system or send a text message to 720-316-8228 (texts will not ring through to me and will be answered the following day).
Emergencies: As a solo practitioner, my practice is not designed for ongoing crisis management. In the case of an emergency, such as chest pain or suicidality, please call 911 and call me to inform me of the situation once you are safe. If you believe you need a practice with 24-hour crisis management, please discuss this with my staff and I so we can help you find the right fit.
Billing: I currently have a fee-for-service practice, which means I am not an in-network provider for insurance companies. Many insurance plans will partially reimburse patients for seeing out-of-network providers for psychotherapy or psychiatric medications. I will happily provide you with the monthly statements to send to your insurance company to take advantage of your benefits. If you have questions, please contact your insurance company directly about the process for reimbursement and your coverage for out-of-network providers.
Payment is expected prior to the initial visit via cash, e-check, credit card, debit card, or FSA/HSA card. If payment is not provided then the initial visit will not take place. Subsequent visits are paid immediately post-session so that we can bill accurately, according to the visit duration. Since I allow some visits to be conducted via the phone and patients are charged for missed appointments, I do require that a credit card number or checking account number be kept on file in our secure system.
